June 1 Headlines

Monday’s papers are fighting on 3 fronts: energy security, NPP unity, and big mining money. PSWU is drawing a red line on electricity privatization, Paul Afoko is preaching reconciliation, and Damang Gold Mine just dropped a quarter-billion-dollar investment. Here’s what’s hot.

Daily Graphic: Energy Security vs Private Hands

 1. “Don’t leave energy in private hands” – PSWU kicks against private participation in electricity distribution

The Public Services Workers’ Union says electricity and its supply are a national security issue that must stay with public mandate, not profit-driven private players. PSWU General Secretary Bernard Adjei wants the government to suspend the proposed Private Sector Participation in NEDCO operations immediately. This sets up a major clash with the government’s energy reforms.

2. GRA activates new tax administration platform

Revenue Ghana is rolling out a new tax system to plug leaks and improve collection. If it works, expect GRA to “bag more revenue” in May, as The Informer also reports.

3. Damang Gold invests $250m in mining equipment

Damang is not playing. First set of 52 heavy-duty machines already being transported. That’s serious capital injection for Ghana’s mining sector and jobs.

Daily Guide & The Ghanaian Point: Damang Money + Development Plans

1. Heath Goldfields unveils $20m 5-Year Community Development Plan

While Damang buys equipment, Heath Goldfields is putting $20m on the table for host communities over 5 years. Traditional leaders signed the development plan yesterday. Direct cash + projects = less tension with mining communities.

2. $250m Investment To Transform Damang Mine

Daily Guide confirms the Damang spend. New fleet of equipment lined up. E&P is betting big on Damang’s future output.

The New Publisher & The Chronicle: Afoko Wants NPP to Move On

1. “No More Begging, No More Bailouts” – Finance Minister Declares

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana is done with IMF-style begging. Tough talk as transport fares go up 20% and fuel prices rise. Ghanaians will feel this one at the pump and in trotros.

2. Afoko To NPP: Move Beyond Old Disputes / Paul Afoko Rallies NPP: Stop Settling Old Scores

Former NPP Chairman Paul Afoko is back on the unity train. From Daily Guide to Chronicle to Publisher, he’s telling the party: “We Must Build Future Bridges” and stop settling old scores if they want victory in 2028. Clear message to factions still fighting 2015 battles.

The Daily Gist: Afenyo-Markin Gets Praised

Afenyo-Markin’s Leadership Lauded At Osahen Excellence Public Lecture

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin got commendation for his leadership style. Oppong Nkrumah also “exposes NDC’s flawed LGBTQ Bill” in the same edition.

The Informer: NDC Internal Fight Goes Public

Early Presidential Campaigns Divide NDC!

President Mahama vs Alhaji Iddrisu Mahama vs Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. The Informer says “defiant Mosquito” snubbed the Cabinet over the “Thank You Tour”. The NDC 2028 race is heating up early, and it’s getting messy.

The Chronicle: Galamsey War Needs More Than Force

Enforcement Alone Can’t Win the Galamsey War – AU Ambassador

Dr. Samuel Ben Owusu says soldiers and arrests won’t fix illegal mining. Need livelihood alternatives, community buy-in, and long-term planning. As the Tree for Life campaign starts June 5, the timing is key.

My Take:

3 things jumped out today.

First, PSWU vs the Government on NEDCO privatization is going to be a big fight. Ghanaians hate dumsor, but they also hate “selling ECG”.

Second, Afoko is touring every paper with the same message: NPP must unite. That means the cracks are still wide.

Third, $270m in investment between Damang and Heath Goldfields shows that mining money is still flowing despite galamsey pressure. The question is: will communities actually feel it?

Which headline worries you most today – energy privatization or NDC’s early 2028 fight?
