John Mahama Declares He Will Not Run for President in 2028

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to adhere to Ghana’s two-term limit and will refrain from running in the 2028 elections.
He stated that stepping down after his second term will allow him the liberty to uphold strict fiscal discipline and prevent the pattern of overspending during election years.
During his three-day state visit, Mahama engaged in bilateral discussions with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, where he criticized the tendency of governments to relax financial regulations to secure votes.

He noted that his administration has already made strides with decreasing inflation and interest rates, as well as a more robust cedi.
His remarks refute opposition assertions that he intends to pursue a third term beyond his final mandate.
In a recent statement, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has categorically asserted that the party will not nominate President John Dramani Mahama for a third term. He highlighted the NDC’s unwavering dedication to adhering to the principles outlined in Ghana’s constitution.
Addressing rumors regarding President Mahama’s political prospects and the party’s succession strategies, Nketiah reiterated the NDC’s commitment to upholding constitutional term limits and the values of democratic governance during an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, August 26.
“We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” he said. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”
