A nationwide voter perception survey has placed New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of seven potential National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential contenders in hypothetical head-to-head contests for the 2028 election.

The findings are contained in the first edition of the Africa Policy Lens (APL) Election Outlook Series 2026, from a survey conducted between July 27 and August 7, 2026.

According to APL, 16,963 respondents were interviewed face-to-face across all 276 constituencies in the 16 regions, with a 99% confidence level and a margin of error of ±1%.

The poll shows Dr Bawumia securing between 45.7% and 49.9% across the seven matchups.

Against NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Dr Bawumia polled 45.8% to 42.4%, with 7.2% undecided and 3.8% voting for neither.

He also led Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson 45.7% to 42.8%.

His widest margins were against Food and Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku – 49.8% to 33.9%; against Prof Joshua Alabi – 49.9% to 34.4%; against Chief of Staff Julius Debrah – 48.4% to 37.9%; and against Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang – 47.4% to 40.2%.

Dr Bawumia also led Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu by 45.9% to 41.5%.

The survey also assessed voter priorities, with honesty and integrity ranked as the most important quality voters want in the next President, followed by job creation and competence in managing the economy.

Geographically, Dr Bawumia won between 9 and 11 of Ghana’s 16 regions in the various matchups.

APL, however, cautioned that the results should not be interpreted as a prediction of the 2028 outcome, noting that voter preferences could change based on political developments, economic conditions and campaign activities.
