Basic schools to reopen Sept 8, 2026, as 2026/2027 calendar is released

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the official academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year, with all public basic schools nationwide set to resume classes on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The calendar covers Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High Schools and was signed by GES Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi.

Key dates for the year:

First Term

Sept 8 – Dec 17, 2026
Mid-term break: Nov 5–6, 2026
Vacation: Dec 18, 2026 – Jan 4, 2027

Second Term

Jan 5 – Mar 25, 2027
Vacation: Mar 26 – Apr 19, 2027

Third Term

Apr 20 – Jul 22, 2027 — marking the end of the academic year.

GES also confirmed that the 2027 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will run from May 5 to May 12, 2027.

The Service reminded schools to observe all public holidays within the academic year, adding that the mandatory mid-term break policy will be enforced across all three terms.

GES is urging school heads, teachers, parents and guardians to study the calendar and make early preparations for the new academic year.
