Upper East Police Arrest 3 Suspects Over Worinyanga Attack
The Upper East Regional Police Command says it has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Iddrisu Sumaila and an attack on Sambin Halidu, the elected chief of Tindorunga community under Worinyanga in the Tempane District.

According to a police statement, officers moved to Garu on May 26, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m. to assist the district command in apprehending persons linked to the incident. The suspects were identified as Majeed Bawumya, 34; Milla Justice, 27; and Majeed Awudu, 20.
Police say a search at the residence of Majeed Bawumya Agbango, also known as Atan Majeed, led to the retrieval of one BRUNI MOD 92 Cal. 8mmK pistol, several sharp objects, GH¢600 in cash, and three mobile phones believed to be connected to the case.

Background to the incident
Police reports indicate that about a month ago, kingmakers of Worinyanga presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the overlord of Bawku, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for vetting ahead of an enskinment ceremony for the Tindorunga chiefship.

According to the statement, members of an opposing faction, including Majeed Bawumya Agbango, allegedly protested the selection of Sambin Halidu and threatened to disrupt the ceremony scheduled for May 26, 2026.
Police say on May 25, 2026, suspect Alhassan Sabrina and other persons currently at large allegedly met at Majeed Bawumya Agbango’s residence in Worinyanga, where plans were made to disrupt the ceremony.
Details of the attack
The police statement says that on May 26, 2026, at about 3:00 a.m., while Sambin Halidu and his family were preparing for the enskinment ceremony, armed persons reportedly stormed the house. They allegedly fired shots indiscriminately and set ablaze a 4×4 Mitsubishi vehicle with registration GE 1115-13.
Several people sustained injuries during the attack. Iddrisu Sumaila, who suffered gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Police response
The Upper East Regional Police Command says investigations are ongoing, and it remains committed to maintaining law and order. The command urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with investigators.
