Kane’s late brace rescues England in dramatic World Cup win over Congo DR

Atlanta, USA –
England booked a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ after a stunning late comeback against the Congo DR at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Captain Harry Kane scored twice in the final 15 minutes to overturn an early deficit and seal a 2-1 victory.
The win sets up a high-stakes clash with co-hosts Mexico at Mexico City Stadium on Sunday, July 5.
Congo Stun England Early
Thomas Tuchel’s side were caught cold in the opening exchanges. Congo DR, playing their first-ever World Cup knockout match, took a shock lead in the 7th minute.

A cross from the right was headed across goal by Chancel Mbemba, finding Brian Cipenga unmarked on the left edge of the box. The forward took one touch and fired a low drive past Jordan Pickford at the near post for his first international goal.
England’s record of never losing to African opposition at the World Cup suddenly looked under threat. Congo DR grew in confidence and came close to doubling their lead when Yoane Wissa struck Wan-Bissaka’s low ball against the post.
England Waste Chances Before the Break
The Three Lions gradually found their rhythm but lacked a cutting edge. Jude Bellingham had two headers saved by a superb Lionel Mpasi in the Congo goal. Noni Madueke’s driving run created space for Marcus Rashford, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka cleared off the line.
England’s best chance of the half fell to Kane on the stroke of halftime. He met a corner with a close-range volley, only for Mpasi to block brilliantly.
Tuchel’s Changes Spark Turnaround
Frustrated by the lack of width, Tuchel introduced Anthony Gordon for the second half. The substitution proved decisive. In the 75th minute, Gordon delivered a pinpoint cross from the left. Kane rose highest to guide a header into the net for his 12th World Cup finals goal, drawing England level and lifting the pressure.

Eleven minutes later, Kane produced the moment of the match. Picking up the ball outside the box, he shifted away from his defender and unleashed a powerful strike into the near post. It was unstoppable, and it was 2-1.
England Through, Congo Exit Proudly
Congo DR pushed for a late equalizer but could not find a way past a now-settled England defense. The African debutants bowed out with pride after a performance that exposed England’s frailties.

Kane, who finished with two goals and the Man of the Match award, said the team “showed character when it mattered.” England now turn their attention to Mexico in a knockout tie that promises another tough test.
