The Anti-illegal Mining Taskforce in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region has successfully dismantled significant galamsey operations, resulting in the destruction of nearly 100 machines and the arrest of two individuals.

The operation targeted illegal mining activities along the Birim River at Ankaase and Anyinam, where miners had set up inland “chanfan” machines to wash gold directly into the river, causing severe pollution and environmental degradation.

The taskforce, which includes military personnel, police officers, and local volunteers, conducted the raid under the orders of District Chief Executive, Ernest Owusu Ntim, who has tasked the team with safeguarding and restoring the river to its original condition.

Approximately 100 illegal miners fled upon noticing the taskforce’s presence. However, only two suspects were apprehended due to the challenging terrain and the risk of drowning during the chase.

At Ankaase, the team faced an attack from individuals guarding the miners, but the military quickly neutralized the threat.

Taskforce leader, Sumaila Ahmed, revealed that this was not the first operation of its kind but expressed frustration that illegal miners frequently return after their equipment is destroyed.

He also voiced concerns regarding the lack of support from local communities, noting that the team sometimes encounters hostility and insults.

In a related development, Alhassan Muniru has urged the government to consider prohibiting the importation of “chanfan” machines and spare parts, emphasizing that cutting off their supply is vital in the battle against galamsey.

The two suspects taken into custody are currently held at Anyinam police station and are anticipated to be brought before the court soon.
