Seven injured in fiery multi-vehicle crash on Accra-Kumasi highway

Seven people have been injured after a fiery multi-vehicle collision on the Accra to Kumasi Highway on Monday evening, causing hours of gridlock and panic among travelers.
According to a post shared on Facebook by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the crash, which occurred along the Accra-Kumasi Highway, involved a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi Pick-Up with registration number GE-8602-17, a Kia Sorento with registration number GT-8601-14, and an STC Bus registered GS-7050-22.
According to reports, one of the vehicles suffered a tyre burst, veered into oncoming traffic, and triggered a chain reaction. The impact caused a bus to catch fire, trapping some passengers inside.
Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Ambulance Service arrived at the scene to douse the flames and evacuate the injured. Photos from the scene showed a completely burnt bus and mangled vehicles along the roadside.
All seven victims were rushed to a nearby hospital. Medical officials say some sustained burns and fractures, but no fatalities have been recorded so far.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department [MTTD] of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary findings point to possible speeding and poor vehicle maintenance as contributing factors.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the collision triggered a major fire outbreak, destroying the fuel tanker, the STC bus, and the Mitsubishi Pick-Up. The Kia Sorento also sustained extensive damage.
The Accra-Kumasi Highway has become notorious for fatal accidents, with road safety advocates repeatedly calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better road infrastructure.
The National Road Safety Authority says it will intensify education campaigns targeting commercial drivers.
Commuters who were stranded for hours appealed to the government to dualize more sections of the highway to reduce head-on collisions.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Red Cross has called on the public to donate blood to support victims of road accidents, noting that demand often spikes during holiday periods.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, avoid over-speeding, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long journeys.
