Sports Ministry owes me GH¢5m for Black Stars Promotions – Shatta Wale fumes over “total disrespect”
Ghanaian dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has alleged that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation owes him about GH¢5 million for promotional work undertaken in support of the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the musician said the outstanding amount covers postings, advertisements, and other promotional activities his team carried out to rally support for Ghana’s participation in the tournament.
“With the World Cup that we did, you know we had to promote whatever… We were supposed to be paid. Up till now, I have not been paid. For the postings and ads, a lot. I think now they owe me about GH¢5 million,” he stated.
Shatta Wale expressed frustration over attempts to retrieve the money, alleging that officials have refused to respond to his calls.
“Oh, not a penny. You call the minister; he will not pick up. The deputy minister of finance will also not pick up. Disrespect, total disrespect in this country,” he fumed.
The artiste, who in March 2026 pledged $100,000 towards the government-led fundraising campaign for the Black Stars’ World Cup participation, said his experience has left him disappointed with some appointees, although he still admires President John Dramani Mahama’s ideology.
“I love Mahama’s ideology, not his appointees,” he added.
His claim comes at a time when the government has intensified resource mobilisation for Ghana’s World Cup campaign. In June 2026, the government announced the release of GH¢76 million to support the campaign, including GH¢58 million for preparations and group stage expenses and GH¢17 million to settle outstanding qualification bonuses.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is yet to officially respond to the allegation.
