3 dead, 15 injured in New Winneba armed mob attack
Three people have been confirmed dead and about 15 others injured, including a police officer, after violent clashes at New Winneba in the Central Region.
The incident happened at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when about 300 irate persons, allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks stormed New Winneba Township.
The group was reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, and attacked residents, shops and homes, causing injuries and damaging property. Sources link the attack to a long-standing land litigation issue in the area.
The injured persons have been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were first deployed to restore order.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has since deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to strengthen security in the area.
Police say the situation is now under control.
The Central Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspects and investigations are ongoing to arrest more people involved in the attack.
Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has also called on the police to be firm and ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
