Mahama commends GAF for clearing Accra-Kumasi Expressway route in 19 weeks, announces $2 billion funding

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Engineer Regiments of the Ghana Armed Forces for completing the clearing of the Right-of-Way for the 198.7-kilometre, six-lane Accra-Kumasi Expressway in just 19 weeks — one week ahead of schedule.
The President described the achievement as a demonstration of discipline, efficiency and patriotism, and has directed that the Engineer Regiments be honoured with the Order of the Companion of the Volta at the next National Honours for their exceptional service.
President Mahama also disclosed that $2 billion has been set aside to fully finance the project, with the entire amount expected to be available by 31st December, 2026, without borrowing.
He further announced plans to return to Kwaso before Christmas to break ground for actual construction to begin, describing the expressway as a transformative project that will redefine Ghana’s transportation network.
According to the President, when completed, the six-lane expressway will significantly improve the movement of people and goods between Ghana’s two largest cities — Accra and Kumasi — while boosting trade, agriculture, industry and economic activities along the corridor.
