Former Minister and NPP Women’s Organiser, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, has condemned alleged sexual abuse involving 19 female students of Obuasi Senior High School.

In a statement issued from the NPP Headquarters dated October 19, 2026, Hon. Koomson said she received with “profound shock, dismay and deep sorrow” media reports, including an investigative report by Manasseh Azure Awuni, concerning alleged sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of the school, Mr. Zakaria Abdulai.

According to the reports cited in her statement, approximately nineteen female students have recounted alleged incidents of sexual abuse. It is also alleged that some of the incidents were formally brought to the attention of school authorities as far back as March 2026, yet no meaningful action was taken.

Hon. Koomson said if established, such failure would constitute grave negligence and a breach of the duty of care owed by educational institutions to safeguard children under their supervision.

“As a mother, a professional teacher and an advocate for the rights and welfare of women and children, I consider these allegations profoundly troubling,” she stated.

She called on all Ghanaians, irrespective of political, religious or social affiliation, to unequivocally condemn all forms of sexual violence, exploitation, harassment and abuse against the girl child.

Calls for CID Probe:

The former Awutu Senya East MP further called on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to undertake a swift, thorough, independent and transparent criminal investigation.

“Where sufficient evidence is established, the appropriate prosecutorial authorities must pursue the necessary legal processes without fear, favour or regard to the political affiliation, social standing or institutional position of any person implicated,” she said.

She stressed that “A child knows no political party colours. We must never subordinate the dignity, safety, and protection of our children to partisan considerations.”

Hon. Koomson also raised concern over reports of possible intimidation and victimisation of the affected students and their families, calling for measures to guarantee their safety, protect their identities and preserve their dignity throughout the process.
