NDC directs Zakaria Abdulai to step aside over Obuasi SHTS sex scandal

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Mr. Zakaria Abdulai, Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School and Constituency Secretary for Juaben, to step aside from the Juaben Constituency Chairmanship race to allow for investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct.
This is contained in an updated press release from the National Secretariat dated 20th October, 2026, signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey. The release (Ref: NDC/HQ/25-3/110) supersedes an earlier one issued on 19th October.
From “Don’t Disqualify” To “Step Aside”
In the first release dated 19th October (Ref: 109), the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) said it had taken note of media reports, including an investigative report by Manasseh Azure Awuni, on allegations of sexual misconduct levelled against Mr. Abdulai.
The Party said it initially took the position that he should resign or be disqualified, but after inviting him to hear his side and considering the GES Committee report, the investigative report, and a directive by Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu referring the matter to CID for criminal investigation and interdiction by GES, FEC resolved NOT to disqualify him – citing fairness, natural justice and presumption of innocence.
Barely 24 hours later, in a dramatic U-turn, FEC has now directed that Mr. Abdulai step aside.
The statement reads:
After further consideration, FEC has directed that Mr Zakaria Abdulai step aside, in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability, to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
“The Party stressed that the position is taken in good faith and is in no way a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr. Abdulai, who remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
“The Party trusts that the CID will conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation, and will be guided by its outcome,” the release said.
By a copy of the release, the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee have been directed to take note and act accordingly.
The allegations involve about 19 female students of Obuasi SHTS.
