NPP drags Attorney-General to Supreme Court over presidential term limits

Accra — The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dragged the Attorney-General to the Supreme Court, seeking constitutional interpretation on presidential term limits.
The party has filed a writ invoking the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to interpret relevant provisions of the 1992 Constitution relating to the tenure of the President.
While details of the reliefs being sought by the NPP are yet to be made public, the case is expected to centre on the interpretation of Article 62 and Article 66 of the Constitution, which deal with qualifications and tenure of the President.
Legal sources indicate the party wants the court to settle any ambiguity and provide authoritative guidance on the matter to guide future democratic practice.
The Attorney-General, as the principal legal advisor to the government, has been named as the respondent and is expected to file a response in the coming days.
The Supreme Court is yet to fix a date for hearing.
The filing comes at a time when political discussions around constitutional reforms and term limits continue to dominate public discourse.
Efforts to get official comments from both the NPP leadership and the Attorney-General’s office were unsuccessful as of press time.
More details to follow as the case develops.
