The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has reacted strongly to the recent assault on nurses at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital), calling on the Ghana Police Service to expedite the arrest of Ralph Saint Williams and his accomplices.

In a statement, the GRNMA leadership expressed appreciation for the initial arrests made by the police and the commitment shown by employers and security agencies to pursue the matter to its conclusion. However, they emphasized the need for the police to intensify efforts to apprehend the main suspect and others involved.

The association assured nurses and midwives of its unwavering support and commitment to protecting their interests within the confines of the Constitution of Ghana, the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651), and the GRNMA Constitution. GRNMA also reaffirmed its dedication to advocating for a resilient health system that guarantees quality and safe services, assuring patients at Ridge Hospital that nursing and midwifery services would continue uninterrupted.

Furthermore, GRNMA called on employers to strengthen security at all health facilities and expressed willingness to partner in improving Ghana’s health system. The association also urged the Ridge Hospital management to provide psychological support for the injured nurse and enhance staff training on coping mechanisms.

In addition, GRNMA appealed to the public to respect nurses, midwives, and other health workers, acknowledging the challenges faced by public health facilities, including workforce gaps and inadequate logistics. The association emphasized the need for cooperation between the public and health workers to ensure effective healthcare delivery.
