Burkina Faso Declares Managed Spilage of Bagre Dam
Officials in Burkina Faso have announced that the Bagre Dam is set to start releasing water on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
In a statement issued on August 22, officials reported that the water level at the dam has increased to 233.98 metres, which accounts for 86.38 percent of its total storage capacity. This means it is only 1.02 metres short of its maximum operational limit.

The announcement, issued by Kindo Issiaka, the Head of Hydraulics at SONABEL (Société Nationale d’Électricité du Burkina Faso), indicated that the controlled spillage is a preventive action aimed at ensuring the structural integrity of the dam and the safety of the public.
SONABEL has called on communities located downstream and others who might be affected to take all necessary precautions prior to the operation.
Additionally, the statement provided an update regarding the Kompienga Dam, highlighting that it currently has an upstream elevation of 177.66 metres, which represents approximately 77.26 percent of its capacity, leaving a margin of 2.34 metres before it reaches its maximum limit.
