Western North Deserves Better: A Call for Equity and Justice

By Prophet Wisdom Aha (Vice president of Western development Association (Wenda)
“It is deeply troubling that Ghana continues to draw immense wealth and vital resources from the Western North Region, resources that sustain much of the nation’s development yet our people see so little in return. The failure of our own leaders to vigorously lobby and demand equitable development for our region is not only painful but a grave injustice. Western North deserves better, and it is time for our voices to be heard and our rights to be secured.”
As advocates and the voice of the voiceless, we cannot remain silent while the Western North Region continues to face systemic neglect despite being one of the richest contributors to Ghana’s economic survival. From cocoa to gold, timber, and other natural resources, our land has served as the backbone of national development for decades. Yet, when one looks around the region, the reality is heartbreaking: poor road networks, inadequate health facilities, underdeveloped schools, and a lack of meaningful employment opportunities for the youth.
This situation exposes a glaring contradiction. How can a region that feeds the nation’s economy so abundantly remain among the least developed? The problem is not the absence of resources, but rather the absence of political will and effective representation. Our leaders, who should be the chief lobbyists for our fair share of national development, have too often failed to press home the urgency of our needs. This silence, whether intentional or due to lack of courage, has left the people of Western North at the margins of national progress.
The injustice is clear: we give much, yet receive little. This cannot continue. Development must be inclusive, and equity demands that the regions which contribute significantly to Ghana’s wealth must not be left behind. Western North deserves modern infrastructure, thriving industries, quality education, reliable healthcare, and sustainable jobs for its people. Anything less is an insult to the sacrifices and contributions of this land.

We therefore call on government, policymakers, civil society organizations, and especially our local leaders to rise above complacency and prioritize the development of the Western North Region. The people are watching, and history will judge those who had the chance to make a difference but chose silence.
Our message is simple and clear: Western North deserves better. It is time for justice, fairness, and accountability. Our voices must be heard, and our rights must be secured not tomorrow, but today.
