Gov’t Prioritizes Fuel Costs as Transport Operators Plan 20% Fare Hike From June 2
Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Sampson Ahi says addressing the factors driving transport fare increases remains a top priority for the government ahead of a planned 20% fare adjustment.
Speaking to Citi News, the MP and member of Parliament’s Transport Committee confirmed that commercial transport operators will implement a 20% increase in fares effective Tuesday, June 2. He expressed confidence that ongoing discussions between transport operators and the Minister for Transport will produce a positive outcome for commuters.
“The government is focused on acquiring more vehicles to complement the efforts of the private sector. Another issue has to do with the cost of fuel, spare parts, and other factors operators consider when determining transport fares,” Mr. Ahi stated.
The planned fare hike by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, GPRTU, and other unions comes amid concerns over rising fuel prices and the high cost of vehicle maintenance across the country.
