Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo is receiving medical treatment after gunmen allegedly opened fire on her vehicle outside her younger brother’s home in Accra on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The incident took place at the premises of Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly called Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, where he was reportedly meeting supporters to push plans for his installation as successor to their late father, Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo. The late founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission died recently, triggering a protracted family dispute over leadership of the church.

How the attack unfolded

According to information available to DeStory Gh, the Dome District Police Command was alerted and quickly moved to the scene as tensions escalated in the area. Witnesses at the residence claim the former MP was present when armed men stormed the compound and targeted her vehicle with gunfire.

The attackers are said to have discharged about 15 rounds of ammunition. One bullet reportedly grazed Adwoa Safo near her neck. She was immediately rushed to a medical facility for treatment. Sources close to the family say she is stable and responding well, though she remains under observation.

Images circulating online show extensive damage to her black SUV, with shattered windows and bullet marks on the body. Other photos appear to show injuries sustained during the incident. Viewers have been advised to exercise discretion.

Succession battle spills over

The shooting comes at a time when the Kristo Asafo family is deeply divided over who should take over from Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo. Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena has been pushing to be installed as the next leader, but the move has faced strong opposition from other family members.

Legal disputes have already stalled the process. A court recently placed an injunction on a ‘planned’ installation ceremony for Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, after some relatives challenged the legitimacy of the succession attempt. The case remains in court.

Sunday’s violence suggests the internal wrangling may be escalating beyond legal channels. Witnesses allege the gunmen acted on the orders of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, though this has not been independently verified and no official charge has been announced.
