Rescue teams have pulled two people alive from the rubble and recovered two bodies after a building collapsed at Gyegyeano in Cape Coast on Sunday morning, authorities confirmed.

The National Disaster Management Organisation said personnel from NADMO, working with the Ghana National Fire Service and volunteer groups, have been on site since dawn. Their search and rescue operation focused on a family of four trapped when the structure gave way.

NADMO’s Central Region office said the survivors are a married couple. Both were extracted alive and rushed to hospital for emergency care. The husband was taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. The wife was transported to Ewim Polyclinic for treatment.

Their two children, a 39-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl, were later confirmed dead at the scene. Regional rapid response units and volunteers are continuing operations as officials begin assessing what caused the collapse.

Floods blamed as rains batter Cape Coast

The collapse happened amid days of heavy rain that have submerged large parts of the Central Regional capital. A prolonged downpour starting 7:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, inundated roads, homes, shops, and workplaces across the metropolis.

Overflowing drains and choked waterways forced water into residential areas. Plastic waste and debris carried by the floodwaters worsened the situation, raising fresh concerns about poor waste disposal in the city.

Movement ground to a halt. Floodwaters submerged major roads, causing severe traffic congestion as drivers sought alternative routes. Many residents were displaced and commuters stranded.

The University of Cape Coast was not spared. Casford area recorded the worst flooding on campus. Other affected zones included the area behind Sandwich Lecture Block, Science Roundabout, Zenith Bank area, Ayensu, and parts of Sasakawa.

The Service also warned the public to avoid flooded areas and weak structures as rains continue.Officials say investigations into the cause of the building collapse are ongoing, while rescue and relief efforts remain active across Cape Coast.
