Ghana’s Black Stars have officially advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the nation’s first appearance in the knockout stage since South Africa 2010.

Despite a 2-1 defeat to Croatia on Saturday, June 27, at Philadelphia Stadium, Ghana secured qualification as one of the best third-placed teams in Group L with 4 points from 3 matches. The result ended years of group-stage exits and reignited national optimism around the team’s campaign in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

How Ghana Got Here

The Black Stars opened their tournament with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England at Boston Stadium on June 24. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was instrumental, making a diving 86th-minute save to preserve the point. England dominated possession 250-34 in the first half, but Ghana’s compact defensive shape frustrated the Three Lions.

Coach Carlos Queiroz praised the team’s “fighting spirit and commitment to the game plan” after the England result. The draw left Ghana “on the brink of securing a place in the knockout stage”.

The final group match against Croatia proved tougher. Ghana led early before Croatia responded with two goals to win 2-1. Defender Derrick Luckassen scored on his World Cup debut in the loss.

What’s Next for Ghana

Ghana will now face Colombia in the Round of 32. Queiroz told reporters in Philadelphia that “the real test starts with Colombia” and noted that defensive issues exposed against Croatia “demand urgent answers”.

The squad includes key names such as Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Inaki Williams. Fans across Accra and Kumasi have already begun planning watch parties, though hundreds were reportedly left stranded outside the Croatia venue.

If Ghana beats Colombia, it would match its best-ever World Cup run from 2010. For now, the focus is on recovery, tactics, and making history on American soil.
