Bawumia engages small-scale miners on reforms for responsible mining
Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has held a productive engagement with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners as part of ongoing consultations with stakeholders in the extractive sector.
The meeting, which was held together with members of the NPP’s Identifiable Groups Committee on the Extractive Sector, focused on the challenges facing small-scale mining and practical reforms needed to sanitize the sector.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the discussions centred on promoting responsible mining, protecting the environment, creating jobs and strengthening local value addition.
In a post after the meeting, Dr. Bawumia wrote: “Together with members of the NPP’s Identifiable Groups Committee on the Extractive Sector, I had a productive engagement today with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners as part of our ongoing consultations with key stakeholders. We discussed the challenges facing small-scale mining and practical reforms to promote responsible mining, protect the environment, create jobs and strengthen local value addition.”
He added that he looks forward to continued collaboration towards a sustainable and productive extractive sector.
The engagement comes at a time when the debate on small-scale mining and the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has intensified, with calls for reforms that balance environmental protection with livelihoods.
Dr. Bawumia has in recent times been engaging various identifiable groups as part of efforts to shape the NPP’s policy direction ahead of the 2028 elections.
