No transport fare increase yet – GPRTU, GRTCC tell public
The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) says no decision has been taken to increase public transport fares for the 2026 fare window.
In a joint press release dated September 8, 2026, the two bodies provided an update on their ongoing engagement with the Ministry of Transport on the review of fares.
According to the statement, consultations formally commenced at a meeting held with the Minister for Transport and his technical team in Accra on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
At the meeting, the Unions presented a proposal for an upward review of public transport fares. Government, on its part, briefed the Unions on prevailing macroeconomic conditions, ongoing measures to stabilize the Ghana cedi, and in particular, the GHS 2.00 per litre intervention on the price of diesel, which is intended to cushion transport operators and the travelling public.
The release signed by Mr. Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary of GPRTU, and Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of GRTCC, said both parties acknowledged the value of the fuel intervention and agreed that its full impact on operating costs, together with the proposal for fare increment, requires further engagement before any determination is made.
“In this regard, no decision to adjust transport fares has been taken,” the statement emphasized.To ensure a fair outcome, a team comprising representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the GRTCC has been formed to review all cost inputs. The outcome will be communicated to the public in due course.
The Transport Operators have therefore urged all members, drivers, station masters and transport owners to maintain the current approved fares until further notice.
“We wish to reassure the public that existing approved fares remain in force across the country,” the statement said.
They further urged drivers, station masters, transport owners and the travelling public to remain calm and cooperative as the process runs its full course.
