Mahama swears in three new Supreme Court Justices
President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, September 10, 2026, swore in three new Supreme Court Justices at the Banquet Hall of the Presidency in Accra.
They are Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah and Justice Edward Amoako Asante, both Justices of the Court of Appeal, and Justice Anthony Forson Jnr, a private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association.
Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and Chief Justice Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie witnessed the ceremony.
President Mahama congratulated the three and urged them to let the 1992 Constitution remain their compass.
“Let the Constitution remain your compass. You will sometimes be called upon to decide matters that generate strong public emotions and competing political interests. In those moments, you must remain unmoved by pressures, praise or criticism,” President Mahama said.
He said judicial independence is not a privilege for judges but a protection for citizens, and must be matched with clear, well-reasoned judgments that strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
The President said the three bring complementary strength to the apex court. Justice Bernasko-Essah was recognized for her competence and discipline on the bench, Justice Asante for his national and regional experience as former President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, and Justice Forson Jnr for his decades of experience at the Bar.
He urged them to remember that behind every case file are human beings whose rights, livelihoods and futures depend on their judgments, and to approach every matter with humility and courage.
The swearing-in follows Parliamentary approval of the nominees two weeks ago after vetting by the Appointments Committee chaired by Bernard Ahiafor.
With their swearing-in, the Supreme Court bench expands from 18 to 21 Justices.
