Carlos Queiroz parts ways with Black Stars after mutual agreement with GFA

Carlos Queiroz will no longer continue as Head Coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, following a mutual decision between the Portuguese trainer and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to terminate his contract.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Queiroz confirmed that discussions held “in a spirit of mutual respect” led both parties to agree that ending the working relationship was “the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else.”
“This was not an easy decision,” Queiroz said, describing it as an honour to have served Ghana.
He thanked the GFA, particularly its President, for the trust reposed in him and the opportunity to lead the four-time African champions.
Queiroz, who took charge with a mandate to rebuild the team and guide preparations towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup, said he arrived in Ghana “determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent.”
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” he stated.
The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach expressed gratitude to his technical staff and all who supported the team since the start of his tenure.
He reserved special praise for the players, urging Ghanaians to continue to believe in the current generation.
“I pay tribute to the players of the Black Stars. Thank you to all of them who represented Ghana with courage, commitment and pride. You fought for your country and carried the hopes of millions,” he said.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them. The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.”
Queiroz also thanked Ghanaian supporters for their “passion, support and warmth,” adding: “I will always carry Ghana with me with respect and affection.”
“Ghana comes first. The Black Stars come first. Ghanaian football comes first,” he concluded.
The GFA is expected to announce interim arrangements and the next steps in the search for a new head coach in the coming days.
