Mahama breaks ground for Green City Housing Project in Kumasi

President John Dramani Mahama yesterday broke ground for the Green City Housing Project at Dedesua in Kumasi, calling it a key plank in the government’s drive to provide affordable and dignified housing.

Speaking at the sod-cutting, President Mahama said Ghana’s housing deficit — now over 1.5 million units — demands urgent action to tackle rapid urbanisation, high construction costs, and poor access to financing.

He said the government’s Reset Agenda seeks to reframe housing as a right, not a privilege. Ongoing interventions include completing the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, district-level social housing, and a low-cost scheme for public sector workers with organised labour and banks.

The President announced a GH¢3 billion revolving housing fund with government, SSNIT, organised labour, and financial institutions to support long-term mortgages. Units under the scheme will be priced in cedis, not dollars, to protect buyers from forex shocks.

He also pledged reforms in the rental sector to improve affordability and dignity for tenants.
Commending Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for releasing 200 acres for the project, President Mahama said Green City will deliver more than 1,000 homes in an integrated, eco-friendly community.
