Police secure conviction of baby abductor; rescue eight-month-old child
The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of a 31-year-old trader, Stella Amedzorme, to three years’ imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
According to a press release dated Wednesday, 5th August, 2026, the case was reported on 17th July 2026 by the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21. The mother told police she had briefly left her son in the care of the convict, a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.
When she returned, both the convict and the baby were missing. Acting on intelligence, police arrested Stella Amedzorme on 18th July 2026 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and rescued the child unharmed.
During investigations, the convict admitted to taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest him to assist with investigations.
The convict was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on 20th July 2026 and remanded into police custody. She reappeared on 3rd August 2026, pleaded guilty to the offence, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
The Volta North Regional Police Command assured the public of its commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
