NPP polling station elections manipulated at last minute — Ejisu MP
Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, has accused some leaders within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to alter agreed election procedures, following the suspension of polling station elections in the area.
The elections, which were scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, could not come off due to a pending legal suit and an injunction application served on regional party representatives and the party.
The dispute stems from disagreements over which register should be used for the exercise.
Some aggrieved party members claimed the Ashanti Regional leadership had directed that the Electoral Commission’s voter register be used for the elections.
However, Mr Boateng and his supporters opposed the move, insisting that the agreed register was the one compiled by the party during its internal registration process.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, Mr Boateng alleged that attempts were made at the last minute to change the electoral arrangements despite prior consensus among stakeholders.
“Four days to the elections, after we all agreed that the regulations will be followed to the latter, the regional rep called me to say that although he is aware of the guidelines, he has been instructed by some members in the region that we should not use the polling station register, rather we should use the EC register,” he said.
Mr Boateng argued that the timing of the directive was meant to deprive aggrieved parties of the opportunity to pursue legal remedies within the party’s structures.
“That was intentional so that you will not have ample time to resort to a legal remedy,” he said.
“Because the NPP constitution will say that before you go to court, you have to exhaust all the internal channels available. So from the beginning they will give you all the indication that the laws will work, but at the last minute you are ambushed and you cannot have the time to seek legal redress,” he added.
According to him, similar incidents occurred in several constituencies during the party’s internal electoral processes.
Mr Boateng further dismissed claims that he had interfered with the elections, insisting that his actions were aimed at ensuring adherence to agreed procedures and party regulations.
