TWIFO ATTI-MORKWA, Central Region

Heavy rainfall in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District has triggered two separate drowning incidents, with one body recovered and search efforts ongoing for a 2026 BECE graduate.

The first victim, a 45-year-old man, went missing three days ago in Morkwa. His body was retrieved on Monday, June 8, 2026, from the Pra River.

Hours later on the same day, Alfred Kumi, a Junior High School graduate from Gomoa Ohua in Gomoa West District, also drowned. Alfred had traveled to visit his father in Twifo Edugyaa to ask for financial support to continue his education after completing the 2026 BECE last month.

According to reports, Alfred went to bathe in the Osen River at Twifo Edugyaa and went missing. His body is yet to be recovered as of Tuesday.NADMO warns against risky river activities
Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Director of NADMO, Mr. James Pra, confirmed both incidents. He said one body had been recovered while search teams were still looking for Alfred.

Mr. Pra urged residents to stop illegal sand winning along riverbanks, warning that the practice creates deep pits that trap people.“They are setting traps for people to die in rivers,” he cautioned.

He also appealed to regional and national NADMO authorities to provide life jackets and other emergency equipment to improve rescue operations during the rainy season.

Safety advisory
With rains intensifying across the Central Region, authorities are advising residents, especially children and JHS graduates on break, to avoid bathing or swimming in swollen rivers and streams.
