Police arrest 39-year-old man over death of UCC student in Cape Coast

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the death of University of Cape Coast student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.
Arrest details
According to a police statement, the suspect, Michael Mensah, was arrested on Sunday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 pm. Officers from the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team picked him up at Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast. The arrest followed what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.

Police say Mensah claims to be a teacher by profession and also works as a driver.
What investigators have found so far
Preliminary investigations show that on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 pm, the suspect picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza, near the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave. Police say she was last seen at Hutchland Beach with the suspect.
Innocentia Atsufui Avinu was a student at UCC. Her death has drawn attention from students, parents, and the university community in Cape Coast.

Investigation ongoing
The police say investigations are continuing to establish the full facts of the case. Authorities have not yet filed formal charges. The suspect remains in custody to assist with further inquiries.
