The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of a married couple at Kusanaba, a suburb of the Zebilla District.

The suspects, identified as Safianu Salam, Awal Salam, Jawal Salam, and a juvenile whose name is being withheld, were picked up at their hideout in Kugre near Garu on June 19, 2026. Police say the arrest followed weeks of intelligence gathering after the attack.

Incident details

According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred on June 10, 2026. Apam Azubilla, 45, and his wife Apam Anomsigna, 35, were in their room at home when four armed men entered and opened fire on them. Neighbors said they heard Apam Azubilla shout for help. His brother, Ayubugre Apam, rushed to the room and found the couple lying on the floor in pools of blood. He immediately raised an alarm, and residents transported them to a health facility.

Apam Anomsigna was pronounced dead on arrival at the Zegoyire Health Centre. Her husband was later referred to the Zebilla District Hospital, but doctors there also confirmed he died on arrival. Medical examination showed both victims sustained gunshot wounds.

Family members who reported the case handed over three AK-47 shell casings to police as evidence. The ammunition is expected to form part of the investigation as detectives work to establish the motive behind the attack.

Suspects in custody

The Upper East Police Command confirmed that all four suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. One of them is a juvenile, and police have not released his name in line with the Juvenile Justice Act.

Authorities say the suspects will be put before court once investigations are completed. Police are also working to determine if the attack was linked to any long-standing dispute or other criminal activity in the area.

The command has urged residents of Kusanaba and surrounding communities to remain calm and provide any useful information that can help with the case. It assured the public that it remains committed to protecting lives and property across the region.

The murders have sparked fear in the community, with many residents calling for increased police patrols to prevent similar incidents.
