Ghana Maritime Authority refutes claims about vessel monitoring system
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has refuted claims that its vessel monitoring system is not working.
In a press release dated 22nd September 2026 and signed by its Public Relations Unit, the Authority said it has taken note of statements made by Mr. Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
Miracles Aboagye had claimed that the Authority’s vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels sailing within Ghana’s waters are not monitored.
According to GMA:
“The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana. The Authority’s surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction is operational.”
The Authority says it continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain. The system is also used for monitoring and protecting offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
“The suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is therefore untrue.”
GMA says it remains committed to continuous surveillance and protection of Ghana’s maritime interests and is urging the public to disregard the claim and rely on official communications from the Authority.
