Police arrest Israel Kwadwo Safo ‘Akofena’ and two others over Dome-Kwabenya shooting incident

The Ghana Police Service has arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, in connection with a shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, on June 21, 2026.
Police say the suspect turned himself in at the Regional Police Headquarters on June 22, 2026. He was later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters to assist with ongoing investigations into the case.

Firearms and ammunition recovered
Following his arrest, police conducted searches at his residence in Kwabenya and on his vehicle. The operation led to the recovery of a large cache of ammunition and weapons. Officers retrieved 120 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 50 rounds of .45 calibre ammunition, and 25 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition. Police also found additional loaded magazines and two Glock pistols. One of the pistols is registered in Israel Kwadwo Safo’s name, while the status of the second firearm is still under investigation.
Authorities say the quantity of ammunition and firearms raised concerns about public safety and prompted a deeper probe into the suspect’s activities.
Two more suspects arrested
As investigations progressed, police arrested two additional persons believed to be connected to the incident. They have been identified as Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson.

The three suspects are currently in police custody and are cooperating with investigators. The Criminal Investigations Department says it is working to establish the full facts surrounding the shooting, the motive behind it, and the source of the weapons recovered.

Court appearance scheduled
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that all three suspects will be put before the court on June 23, 2026, to face charges related to the incident.
Police have assured the public that investigations are continuing and urged anyone with useful information to come forward. They also reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens and dealing firmly with anyone found engaging in violent acts.
The shooting involving the former MP has attracted public attention, with many calling for a thorough probe. The police say they will provide further updates as the case progresses through the legal process.
