Amsterdam, Netherlands – July 9, 2026

Ohene Kwame Frimpong, 39, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North in Ghana, remains in custody in the Netherlands as the District Court of North Holland continues to process an extradition request from the United States, the Public Prosecution Service of North Holland has confirmed.

Frimpong was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport following a US request. His case is currently before the District Court of North Holland under case reference number 15/133807-26. Prosecutors said they cannot say when a decision will be reached.

According to court records, two hearings have already been held on the issue of his detention. In June, the chamber responsible for pre-trial detention rejected a request by Frimpong’s lawyer to suspend his detention pending the outcome of the extradition proceedings. That hearing was held behind closed doors in line with Dutch judicial procedure for pre-trial matters.

The defense appealed the decision. Last week, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal heard the case. In a ruling dated July 1, the court declared the appeal inadmissible and rejected the request for suspension. Frimpong, therefore, remains in custody while the substantive extradition case proceeds.

Under Dutch law, the District Court must determine whether the US extradition request meets treaty obligations and domestic legal requirements before any transfer can be authorized. The court will also assess whether the legal thresholds for extradition have been satisfied. The Public Prosecution Service said it would not comment further on the substance of the request while the matter is before the court.

News of the arrest has generated discussion in Ghana, where Frimpong represents Asante Akim North Constituency in Parliament. As of press time, the Office of Parliament and the Ghanaian Embassy in The Hague had not issued an official statement on the matter.

Legal experts note that extradition cases in the Netherlands can take several months to conclude, depending on the complexity of the allegations and any further legal challenges. The specific charges in the US request have not been made public by Dutch authorities, citing judicial confidentiality during ongoing proceedings.

Frimpong remains in a correctional facility in North Holland pending the court’s decision on the extradition request.
