Labour dispute looms as Teacher Unions warn GES over August 31st deadline for promotion placements
A major labour unrest is looming in the education sector as teacher unions have issued a strong warning to the Ghana Education Service (GES) over delays in promotion placements.
The unions, made up of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-GH), say GES must complete the placement of all qualified teachers who passed the recent promotion interviews by the August 31st deadline.
According to the unions, thousands of teachers who sat for the aptitude test and went through interviews months ago are still awaiting their promotion letters and placement on the new rank, affecting their salary upgrades and morale.
In a joint statement, the leadership of the unions expressed frustration at what they described as the slow pace of work by GES, warning that failure to meet the deadline will leave them with no option but to take industrial action.
“We have exercised enough patience. Our members complied with all requirements and passed the interviews. It is unacceptable for GES to keep them waiting indefinitely,” a spokesperson for the unions said.
They are demanding that GES, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, ensure all promotion placements are released, and all salary arrears are paid without further delay.
Efforts to reach GES management for comment were unsuccessful as at press time, but sources indicate the Service is working to meet the deadline.
Teachers across the country say they are anxiously waiting to see if GES will act before the deadline expires.
