New Local Government Minister tours Jospong waste facilities, assesses sanitation challenges
The newly appointed Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has toured key waste management facilities in the Greater Accra Region to assess challenges in the sanitation sector and explore investment opportunities to improve Ghana’s waste management infrastructure.
The tour, which forms part of his familiarization with the sector, took him to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), the Achimota and Jamestown Waste Transfer Stations, all subsidiaries of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), as well as the Kpone Landfill Site.
At ACARP, the Minister was briefed on the plant’s operations, including its capacity to receive and process over 2,000 tonnes of mixed municipal solid waste daily, and its role in producing compost and recyclables. Management highlighted challenges including inadequate waste segregation at source and funding gaps.
At the Achimota and Jamestown Waste Transfer Stations, Hon. Ayariga inspected operations aimed at improving waste collection efficiency within Accra by reducing haulage time for waste trucks.
The tour ended at the Kpone Landfill Site, where discussions centered on decommissioning challenges, leachate management, and the need for sustainable landfill management and more engineered landfill sites across the country.
Hon. Ayariga commended the Jospong Group for its massive investment in Ghana’s waste management infrastructure, noting that government sees the private sector as a critical partner in achieving a clean and healthy environment.
He assured that government will create the enabling environment for private investment to thrive while exploring sustainable financing models for sanitation, including the enforcement of polluter-pay systems.
