Over 24,000 medical equipment distributed to boost Free Primary Healthcare

More than 24,000 pieces of basic medical equipment have been distributed to primary healthcare facilities across Ghana to strengthen the implementation of the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, at a community durbar held at the Fian Health Centre in the Daffiama Bussie Issa District of the Upper West Region.

According to the Minister, 5,000 healthcare bags containing essential equipment have already been distributed to frontline workers, with an additional 5,000 healthcare bags and 7,000 motorbikes and tricycles expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.

He explained that the logistics are aimed at supporting health professionals to provide community-based services by taking healthcare directly to homes, churches, mosques and communities, with a focus on prevention and early detection.

Hon. Akandoh noted that under the initiative, residents will be screened for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes and, where necessary, referred for further care — shifting healthcare delivery from a predominantly hospital-based approach to one that begins in the community.

He stressed that the FPHC provides free services at CHPS compounds, health centres and polyclinics, including treatment for common conditions such as malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory infections.
