NPP Decides: Over 7,000 delegates storm Kumasi for National Executives Election

The Garden City of Kumasi has been draped in the red, white and blue colours of the New Patriotic Party as more than 7,000 delegates converge on the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for the party’s National Delegates Conference and election of new national officers on Saturday, October 3.
A total of 7,121 delegates from all 16 regions are expected to vote, according to the National Officers’ Elections Committee. The Electoral Commission says all electoral materials and ballot papers have been deployed to the Ashanti Region, with voting to take place across 31 polling stations under EC supervision.
Forty-seven aspirants are contesting nine positions: National Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Nasara Organiser, National Treasurer and National Communications Director.
The chairmanship race is the main attraction, featuring former National Chairmen Paul Afoko and John Boadu, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe. Political watchers say the contest will shape the opposition party’s reorganisation drive ahead of the 2028 general election.
The General Secretary contest pits incumbent Justin Frimpong Kodua against former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi, former Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro MP Sylvester Tetteh and Dr Charles Dwamena. Thirteen aspirants are vying for Vice-Chairperson positions, while seven are contesting for National Organiser.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye is standing unopposed for National Communications Director.
Ahead of the vote, delegates will consider proposed constitutional amendments from 9:00 a.m., with voting scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon. Key proposals include whether the flagbearer should be recognised as party leader for stronger cohesion, restoring the President to the National Steering Committee, and expanding voting rights in presidential and parliamentary primaries to all card-bearing members.
The city is buzzing with activity. Huge billboards bearing candidates’ portraits line major roads and intersections, party flags flutter from street-light poles, and the Baba Yara Stadium precinct has been fully decorated for the occasion. Traders have also cashed in, stocking party souvenirs in anticipation of brisk business.
Mr Frederick Opare-Ansah, Chairman of the National Officers’ Elections Committee, says arrangements for accommodation, transportation, feeding and security are complete.
The outcome is expected to determine the NPP’s organisational direction as it seeks to rebuild and present a united front going into 2028.
