The Ghana Armed Forces has begun early groundwork on the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, clearing 17.75 kilometres of dense vegetation along the project’s 175.6-kilometre right-of-way within weeks of deployment.

The update was shared by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson in a post on X on Tuesday, May 5, highlighting what he described as rapid progress on the flagship infrastructure project.

According to him, four military work gangs are operating continuously from Asuboa near Akim Oda, working under challenging weather conditions to complete the initial phase of the project within a 20-week timeline.

The 198.7-kilometre, six-lane expressway is a key priority under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama, and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from approximately six hours to about two hours.

The Finance Minister, in November 2025, on the Citi Breakfast Show, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the project within three years, despite public scepticism over the feasibility of the timeline.

Senior military leadership, including Chief of Defence Staff William Agyapong, has also inspected the ongoing works and commended the pace of execution by troops on the ground.

“So make sure that in your dealings, especially when we come across some farms and properties, let’s be sure that they have been assessed by the valuers already, and we’ve been given the go-ahead before we go ahead to destroy them.

“But once again, thank you for your hard work and let’s see how we push this through.  When there are issues, within the shortest possible time, let us know and be assured that everything that you require for you to get this job done will be made available for you, he said.

Parliament had earlier approved the concession agreement for the project, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways serving as the contracting authority and Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited as the concessionaire.
