The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, says Parliament and key state institutions have been mobilised following the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North in the Netherlands.

He said the development, which occurred on Sunday, was immediately escalated after he was informed of the situation early that morning.

According to him, the matter was first referred to parliamentary leadership, after which the Majority Leader engaged directly with officials in the Netherlands to better understand the circumstances surrounding the detention.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, May 13, Mr Dafeamekpor explained that the response has since involved several state actors, including the Foreign Affairs Minister, Ghana’s Ambassador to The Hague, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Clerk to Parliament.

He said the Attorney-General’s involvement is particularly important due to legal considerations linked to the Rome Statute and issues relating to the MP’s diplomatic passport.

He further disclosed that Parliament has secured legal representation for the detained lawmaker, adding that a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague is currently handling the case.

According to him, engagements have been ongoing since Sunday, with further consultations held with legal representatives to ensure the matter is properly addressed.

Mr Dafeamekpor stressed that Parliament has coordinated the response thoroughly across all relevant institutions.

He also assured that the detained MP is in good condition.

He noted that although the trip was private, the use of a diplomatic passport has made the matter a priority for parliamentary and state intervention.

He added that diplomatic and legal processes are ongoing as authorities work to resolve the situation.
