Held under the theme “Consolidating Parliamentary Consensus: Advancing the African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values”, the conference brought together delegates from about 20 African countries.

Conference described as “citadel of African liberty.”

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Planning Committee, Hon. Andrews Asiamah Amoako, described the gathering as a historic citadel of African liberty.

Delivering closing remarks on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Hon. Asiamah said participants assembled not just to deliberate but to answer what he called “the summons of history”.He expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for making the conference possible. He commended his belief in the African Renaissance, which he said inspired the event from start to finish.

Gov’t support praised

Special appreciation was extended to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, who represented the President. Hon. Asiamah noted that his presence and contributions enriched deliberations and showed the government’s commitment to promoting African values.“The strong support shown by the government reflected a shared commitment to preserving the continent’s heritage and advancing its future,” he stated.

Charter called “covenant of the unconquered.”

Referring to the charter adopted, the Deputy Speaker said it was not meant to be archived but should serve as “a covenant of the unconquered” and “the proclamation of our legislative emancipation”.He declared that the African family, defined by heritage, protected by laws, and cherished by communities, remains a non-negotiable red line.

Hon. Asiamah urged participants to integrate the charter into their domestic laws and “march forward into tomorrow united in purpose, firm in conviction, and unshakable in sovereignty”.

Parliamentary consensus on African values

The 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference is expected to strengthen legislative cooperation among African parliaments on issues of family, culture, and sovereignty.

With delegates from 20 countries, the adoption of the charter marks a step toward harmonizing laws that protect African traditions amid global cultural shifts.
