FIFA has confirmed that Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey will miss Ghana’s first 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Panama after his visa application to enter Canada was refused by the Canadian government.

The Arsenal star is currently with Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, USA. He will be unable to travel across the border for the Group Stage opener scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

FIFA Clarifies It Has No Role In Visa Decisions

In a full statement sent to The Athletic FC, FIFA addressed the development and emphasized its limited role in immigration matters.

“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government,” FIFA stated.

The governing body further clarified: “FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas. As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”

Impact On Black Stars’ World Cup Campaign

Partey’s absence is a major blow for Ghana. The 31-year-old midfielder is the captain and one of the most experienced players in Otto Addo’s squad. His ball-winning, passing range and leadership have been central to the Black Stars since the 2022 World Cup.

Ghana opens its 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama in Canada on June 17. The Black Stars will also face group opponents in the US and Mexico as part of the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by three nations.

With Partey based in Boston, Ghana’s technical team must now adjust midfield plans for the Panama clash. His availability for later group matches in the USA will depend on travel logistics.

Visa Issues Not New At FIFA Tournaments

FIFA noted that visa decisions have affected teams at previous World Cups and international events. Host nations retain full authority over entry requirements, even for accredited players and officials.

The Ghana Football Association GFA is yet to comment on whether an appeal or alternative travel arrangement is being pursued. Government recently released GH₵76.4 million to support the Black Stars’ World Cup preparations and bonuses.
