England 0-0 Ghana: Black Stars’ defensive masterclass stuns Three Lions at World Cup

By Seth Yeboah – Wednesday, June 24, 2026, BOSTON
England suffered a World Cup setback on Tuesday night as Ghana held Thomas Tuchel’s side to a stubborn 0-0 draw at Gillette Stadium, leaving Group L wide open heading into the final round of fixtures.

Watched by 63,983 fans in damp, cool conditions, the Three Lions dominated possession and fired 19 shots at goal compared to Ghana’s two. Yet they were repeatedly denied by stand-in goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who delivered the performance of his life to keep England at bay.

The closest England came to breaking the deadlock was late on, when substitute Nico O’Reilly rose highest to meet a cross, only to see his header crash against the crossbar. Harry Kane also tested Asare from close range, but Ghana’s defense, led by Thomas Partey, stood firm.

After opening their campaign with a confident 4-2 win over Croatia, England’s stodgy display echoed some of the faltering performances that plagued them during Euro 2024. Despite controlling the game, they rarely looked like finding a way past Asare.
Points shared, pressure builds
Both England and Ghana now sit on four points with one group game remaining. Progression to the knockout stage looks all but assured, but the final positions in Group L remain in the balance.

England can secure top spot and a kinder last-32 tie by beating Panama at MetLife Stadium on Saturday. Ghana will take confidence from a result few expected against a side ranked 69 places above them in the world rankings.
England’s record of never losing to African opposition at the World Cup remains intact, but Tuchel will know his team must improve in front of goal if they are to go all the way.
‘Our game plan worked’ – Ayew
Ghana striker Jordan Ayew praised his team’s discipline after the final whistle.
“We stayed humble and defended well. I think our game plan worked,” Ayew said. “We defended really, really well. We are playing against one of the teams in the title race. We are doing our best to make our country and ourselves proud.”Lined up in a compact 4-5-1 formation, the Black Stars absorbed pressure and hit England on the break. Ayew and Mohammed Kudus offered a threat on the counter, while Partey broke up play in midfield.‘How did we not score?’ – Tuchel

England head coach Thomas Tuchel cut a frustrated figure in his post-match interview on US television.
“Things are on a very fine line in football,” Tuchel said. “How did that ball not go in at the last moment? If it was going to fall to anyone, it should have been Harry. But you saw, it didn’t happen. [Kane] “Ghana defended with a 4-5-1 formation. If you can’t break the deadlock with a goal, it turns into a game of patience. Our substitutes were good again and made a big impact. It needs to continue like this.”
Tuchel’s side will now turn their focus to Panama, knowing a win will guarantee progression and likely a first-place finish.
For Ghana, the draw represents a giant step forward. Ranked 73rd globally, they battled with organization and heart, and left Boston with the belief that they can reach the knockout rounds.
Next up: England vs Panama, Saturday, MetLife Stadium. Ghana face their final group opponent with qualification still in their hands.
