Jospong Group inspects Accra flood zones, launches drain-clearing drive after heavy rains

ACCRA, Ghana
The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has toured some of Accra’s major flood-prone areas to assess damage from Monday’s heavy rains and worsening drainage blockages.

The visit comes as Accra counts 12 deaths and 150 rescues following floods that submerged communities, including Tse Addo, Dome, Afienya, and Kasoa.
Jospong Group’s Flood Assessment Tour
Dr. Agyepong inspected clogged drains and waterways that were overwhelmed during the June 29 downpour. He said the tour reflects a renewed commitment by the Jospong Group, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, and Dredge Masters to support national efforts.

“We are here to assess and act,” Dr. Agyepong stated. “Our goal is to support government and communities to build cleaner, safer, and more resilient cities.”

Drain-Clearing Intervention to Begin
The intervention will target drains and waterways that have become heavily clogged over the years. According to Jospong Group, the focus areas are:
- Silt Removal: Clearing accumulated silt that reduces water flow capacity.
- Plastic Waste: Extracting plastic and solid debris blocking drains.
- Other Debris: Desilting major waterways to prevent flash flooding during heavy rainfall.

Officials say blocked drains contributed significantly to the flash floods that cut off roads, shut down power substations, and forced schools and courts to suspend activities.
Broader Flood Response in Accra
The private-sector push adds to government efforts. President John Mahama has ordered a decongestion plan for Accra, while Regional Minister Linda Ocloo directed MMDCEs to intensify response. Emergency teams remain deployed in Tema, Kasoa, and Accra.

With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting more rain this week, Jospong Group says its teams will move quickly to open choked drains before the next downpour.
