Two human traffickers jailed 20 years each in Tema for forcing 11 Nigerians into Cyber Fraud

The Tema Regional Police Command has secured 20-year prison sentences for two men convicted of human trafficking and causing harm after they lured 11 Nigerian nationals to Ghana under false job promises and forced them into cyber fraud.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Police named the convicts as Kingsley Ndifon, 29, and Emmanuel Akong, 25.
According to the statement from the Public Affairs Unit, the two were arrested on 20th August 2023 at Sebrepor, a suburb of Tema, following a distress call received by the Afienya District Police Command that some persons were being held in a house against their will.
“A Police patrol team proceeded to the location and, with the assistance of concerned residents, arrested the two suspects and rescued eleven Nigerian nationals who were being kept in the house,” the release stated.
During a search of the premises, police recovered sixteen laptops and one iPad from rooms occupied by the suspects.
Investigations established that the victims had been recruited from Nigeria to Ghana by the suspects under the pretext of securing employment for them. However, upon arrival in Ghana, the victims were allegedly confined to the house at Sebrepor and forced into cyber-related activities.
The Police said the suspects confiscated the victims’ mobile phones and identification cards and compelled them to engage in internet fraud using the laptops provided by the suspects.
“Investigations further revealed that the victims were fed once a day and subjected to severe physical abuse whenever they failed to comply with instructions. They were allegedly beaten,” the statement added.
The Tema Regional Police Command said the conviction and sentencing is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on human trafficking and cybercrime syndicates operating in the region.
The Service has urged the public to report suspicious activities in their communities to the nearest police station.
