Haruna Iddrisu Inaugurates Ghana Commission for UNESCO General Assembly, Charges Members to Deepen Global Partnerships
Accra, August 5, 2026 –
The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, on Wednesday inaugurated the General Assembly of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, describing the move as a critical step toward strengthening Ghana’s partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The ceremony took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Education in Accra and brought together members of the newly constituted Assembly, education stakeholders, and officials of the Ministry.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Iddrisu said the inauguration marked an important milestone in repositioning the Commission to play a more active role in advancing Ghana’s development agenda through UNESCO’s mandate in education, science, culture and communication.
He urged members of the General Assembly to leverage their expertise, networks and experience to support the Commission’s work.
“You have been selected because of the knowledge you bring to bear. I charge you to use that knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the development of the Commission and to deepen Ghana’s relationship with UNESCO,” the Minister stated.
Hon. Iddrisu further encouraged the Assembly to work collectively to advance UNESCO’s global objectives while ensuring that programmes are tailored to meet Ghana’s specific needs.
He tasked them to support efforts aimed at mobilizing resources and attracting technical assistance for national development programmes, particularly in areas such as education reform, cultural preservation, scientific research and digital innovation.
“UNESCO is a vital partner in our quest to build a more inclusive and resilient education system and to safeguard our heritage. The Commission must therefore be at the forefront of identifying opportunities that will bring direct benefit to our schools, our communities and our creative industry,” he added.
The Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Mr. Osman Daiju Damba, also addressed the Assembly. He congratulated the newly inaugurated members and described the occasion as a significant milestone in the implementation of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO Act, 2023 (Act 1104).
Mr. Damba noted that the Act provides a stronger legal and institutional framework for the Commission to coordinate UNESCO-related activities in the country. He expressed optimism that with the new General Assembly in place, the Commission would be better positioned to deliver on its mandate and to align national priorities with UNESCO’s 2030 agenda.
In a related development later in the day, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu administered the Oath of Secrecy to the newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of SDA College of Education, Asokore-Koforidua, retired Colonel Peter Nyarko Duodu. The brief ceremony formally marked Col. Duodu’s assumption of office.
The Minister charged him to bring his experience in leadership and discipline to bear on the governance and development of the College. He emphasized the need for strong oversight to ensure quality teacher training, infrastructure development and accountability in the management of public resources.
Hon. Iddrisu assured both the Commission and the College of the Ministry’s continued support as government works to reposition Ghana’s education sector for global competitiveness.
