25 on trial over 2020/2024 election killings as police hunt 13 more – Muntaka
Twenty-five suspects are currently standing trial in connection with election-related killings recorded during Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed.
Addressing the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on Monday, August 24, the Minister said a total of 26 suspects had been put before the courts so far, with one person discharged, leaving 25 to face prosecution.
He further revealed that the Ghana Police Service is actively pursuing 13 additional suspects who have been identified in connection with various incidents but remain at large.
“The public will be duly informed of further developments as investigations and prosecution progress,” Mr. Muntaka said, appealing to the public to volunteer information leading to the arrest of the fugitives.
The update follows President John Dramani Mahama’s directive on January 10, 2025, for a full-scale investigation into electoral violence. Pursuant to that directive, the Inspector-General of Police established a Special Task Force within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on January 16, 2025.
According to the Minister, the Task Force identified 12 separate cases — six from the 2020 polls and six from the 2024 polls — involving 15 deaths in total.
The fatalities were recorded across Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono East, Savannah, Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.
A breakdown of the Task Force’s findings shows that three incidents resulting in four deaths were linked to armed police patrol teams, three cases resulting in three deaths involved military personnel, while four incidents resulting in five deaths were attributed to firearms used by political party supporters.
Mr. Muntaka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to justice, stressing that anyone found culpable would be held accountable in accordance with the law, regardless of status.
The report of the Task Force, which details how each case came to police attention and actions taken by initial investigators, has been submitted to the President.
