Afenyo-Markin sues Sammy Gyamfi over extortion allegations

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has filed lawsuits against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, and two major media organizations over allegations that he engaged in extortion.
The legal action was announced by the Effutu MP himself when Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026, after being recalled by the Speaker to consider an urgent Financial Sector Bill.
According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, he has caused writs to be filed in two separate cases.
The first suit, No. GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, has been filed at the Accra High Court.
The second suit, No. GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM, is before the Achimota Circuit Court.
The suits follow weeks of public exchanges between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Mr. Afenyo-Markin and the Minority have been demanding accountability over a reported loss of US$1.7 billion by the Bank of Ghana in 2025 under the DGPP, and have been scrutinizing the role of GoldBod.
In response to the pressure, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” on Joy FM and other platforms, a comment that was carried by Multimedia and Despite Media.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said he had chosen to take the high moral ground by submitting himself to the law rather than engaging in a media war.
“I expect that if they muster the courage and report that I have extorted from them and I am invited, I shall submit myself to every investigation so that eventually my name is cleared,” he said.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time, the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.
The Minority Leader further declared his readiness to submit himself to investigations by the Ghana Police Service, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) or any other competent investigative body.
Three petitions have already been filed at the OSP over the extortion allegations, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi has indicated he is prepared to defend the claims in court.
