Bawumia consults Ghana Medical Association, calls for paradigm shift in healthcare policy
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has held a consultative meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) as part of his ongoing engagements with key stakeholders and identifiable groups across the country.
The meeting, which took place at the GMA House at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, was led by the President of the Association, Professor Dr. Ernest Yorke.
In a statement after the meeting, Dr. Bawumia said discussions focused on the pressing challenges facing medical doctors in Ghana, including health workforce retention, remuneration, inequitable distribution of doctors, infrastructure deficits, emergency preparedness, conditions of service, deprived area allowance, the role of the private sector, and the Medical and Dental Council’s requirement for doctors to write licensing exams.
“Following our discussions, I am convinced that a paradigm shift is needed in our health care policies. Some brilliant ideas were put on the table, and I am very encouraged that when implemented, they will be transformational for the welfare of doctors and the health sector as a whole,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He described healthcare delivery as a collaborative mission and expressed gratitude to the GMA leadership for their insights and dedication to the well-being of Ghanaians.
“Together, we will continue to build a robust, resilient, and patient-centered healthcare system that leaves no community behind,” he added.
