Police restore calm at Nchiraa after Yam Festival shooting; two dead, 14 injured

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has restored calm at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region following disturbances that left two persons dead and fourteen others injured during the Yam Festival celebration.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the four-way junction at Nchiraa.
According to a press release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, and dated 5th October, 2026, the disturbances erupted at about 5:30 p.m. after the Yam festival programme had ended.
The statement said Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace when a gunshot was heard, triggering the disturbances.
Two persons died while thirteen others, including a Police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Police say patrols have been intensified in Nchiraa and the situation remains calm.
“The Bono Regional Police Command assures the public that every effort is being made to arrest any individual involved in the disturbances,” the statement said.
